A Great Family Dog: Flat Coated Retriever Mix

The Flat coated retriever mix is thought to be a blend of Newfoundland, Pointer and Irish Setter with a little Labrador in the mix. It originated in England in the 1800′s and was used as a water-fowl retriever. It was a fairly popular breed until the World War when labradors and golden retrievers became the more coveted dog as a pet.

As an excellent bird dog and swimmer, the Flat coated retriever mix also makes an outstanding family pet. It has an excellent sense of smell and remarkable intuition. They are used primarily for hunting, retrieving, guard dog responsibilities, tracking and agility.

You will recognize immediately the appearance of a Flat coated retriever mix by its beautiful black, shiny coat. It will have well-feathered chest, legs and tail and a long, molded sleek head. Its nose could be black for a black colored dog and brown for a liver colored dog. A full-grown Flat coated retriever mix will have a height between twenty-two and twenty-three inches and a weight between sixty to seventy pounds. It has a life expectancy of around ten years.
Some Flat coated retriever mixes will have been known to contract cancer. Hip Dysplasia is another problem that is historically tied to the breed. Other problems that may crop up are PRA, epilepsy and CHD, It should have regular visits to the vet for vaccinations and check ups for these illnesses.

It is a very active dog and needs attention and exercise from its family. It gets along very well in a household with open space, but is not suited well for apartment life. It loves to play with family on a regular basis to get the excess energy out. The Flat coated retriever mix is easily trained, and can be a joyful experience for both the trainer and dog because of the energy level of the dog. The Flat coated retriever would make a wonderful jogging companion.

The Flat coated retriever mix is an average shedder and needs very little grooming. A weekly brushing and a trim every once in awhile is all of the maintenance it will need on its coat.

With the family, it is a very happy dog. It has a wonderful temperament and is very smart, friendly and active. It is a sweet spirited dog that gets along with everyone. A flat coated retriever mix would be a great choice of a pet for an active family.
