Getting a Flat Coated Retriever From a Kennel
If you are ever looking for a dog that will maintain its puppy-like attitude, then consider going to a flat coated retriever kennel. Just ask any owner or breeder and they will tell you all about the dog’s love for playing and running. They also love to retrieve, and can easily wear their owners out before they tire. This breed makes a great family pet and gets along well with other animals and new people.
The dogs usually stand around 23 inches tall and weigh around 65 pounds. They were bred to be outstanding retrievers on both land and in water. They generally have black coats, though brown does occur normally as well. The dogs can also have a yellow or cream colored coat, though they are rare. The only drawback of a dog with one of the lighter coats is that they cannot be shown in some competitions. They have a single coat that is moderate in length and shed a normal amount. The breed has an interesting history, so talk with the flat coated retriever kennel owner to learn more.
They love to play outdoors and if they are allowed to play and release some of their excess energy, they can have low enough indoor activity levels to be good house dogs. They are not recommended for people who live in apartments though because too little exercise can result in overly activeness which can lead to destructive behavior. This especially can occur if they are left alone too long. Just ask someone at your local flat coated retriever kennel if your living arrangements are suitable for a breed such as this.
As mentioned before, the flat coated retriever gets along well with other people and other animals, including cats. They are outgoing and friendly and make good family pets. They are not recommended for families with small children though. This is not out of fear they may be aggressive, but that they may accidentally hurt smaller children while playing and that older children are better able to play with them. Obedience training should begin early in their lives and it should be complimented with positive reinforcement. If you do not know how to train them, your flat coated retriever kennel can probably recommend training techniques or refer you to a training center.
